Over Labor Day weekend our troop went on a trip to Savannah, Georgia, birthplace of Juliet Gordon Low. Our first day, Saturday, was spent at the birthplace. In the morning session we learned a few more things about Juliet Low and we toured the home she was raised in as a child. Our afternoon session (A Rainy Day in 1870) taught us what children did for fun when Juliette Low was a child. We were taught to embroider, make fans and masks, make our own paper dolls and learn the "language" of the hand fans. It would probably be the equivilent of text messaging today! Later that evening we were taken on a carriage driven ghost tour of historic downtown Savannah. What a scary experience that was! On Sunday we visited Old Fort Jackson for a look into a soldier's life during the civil war. Our troop was taught how to salute our sargent, marching commands and the many ways of communicating between forts. We were also given a demonstration of a cannon being fired. It was a great experience. The rest of our day was spent visiting the gravesite of Juliette Low, the Andrew Low House and taking a trolley tour of historic Savannah as well as making candles for us to take home. It was a wonderful trip and we wish we could have experienced more of Savannah.
Troop 1023 would like to send a BIG THANK YOU to GSPGC/Girl Op Fund and the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace for the grants we received to make our trip possible!!
